Most people who get braces will need inter arch rubber bands or inter arch elastics. The purpose of these rubber bands is to put forces on the teeth to move the upper and lower jaw and the upper and lower teeth to a proper fit, they will help to adjust the bite in patients that have overbites, under bites and cross bites. These rubber bands come in different sizes and are placed and removed by the patient. Rubber bands are generally worn all of the time, even while sleeping. They are removed when brushing and flossing and can also be removed while eating but it is not required. It is important that rubber bands are worn as directed because, if not, it could delay the progress of the treatment or it may prevent correction of the bite. If rubber band is not worn continuously and it is used intermittently, it will be more painful and uncomfortable for the patient since the teeth never adjust to the forces of rubber bands.
It is important to change the rubber bands daily because, like any rubber band, they will lose their elasticity and consequently effectiveness of rubber band will be reduced. It is important to remember that adjusting the bite can take longer than straightening the teeth and good compliance with rubber bands will lead to perfect orthodontic results. Once the patient is used to placing the rubber bands, it will become very easy and there won’t be any need to use a mirror.
